Hobie Surf Shop's "Green Room"

San Clemente's All Environmentally Sustainable Store
Founder of the Action Sports Environmental Coalition (ASEC), Frank Scura, presented the Green Room concept about three years ago to Jake Schwarner and Mark Christy, owners of the Hobie Surf Shops. In June of 09', Hobie's Laguna Beach location debuted their first Green Room, a section of the store dedicated to displaying eco-friendly products. Last fall, Hobie transformed its San Clemente store into a 100% green retail space.

"Our local customers really like what we have done because it represents something that makes sense and is completely different than any other surf shop you go into," said Jake. STYLE TRIBE asked Mr. Schwarner to divulge more about the San Clemente store...

Hobie Surf Shop's 'Green Room' ST: How large is the Green Room and what products are featured?
JS: The space is 1,200 sq. ft. The products are environmentally progressive, mostly made with sustainable materials, organic cottons and a variety of natural fibers and materials.

ST: Which brands do you carry?
JS: Patagonia, Billabong, Volcom, Hurley, Hippy Tree, Ando and Friends, Element, Quiksilver, L-Space, E Vocal, Arbor and Sector 9. There are tons of accessories that compliment the clothing.

Hobie Surf Shop's 'Green Room' ST: How has the Green Room helped Hobie?
JS: It brought a lot of of exposure, as we were the first in the nation to see this vision and roll out the first Green Room in Laguna Beach with 600 sq. ft. and now the entire San Clemente store. San Clemente has really taken off, we have two stores there and the Green Room sits right in the middle of the most populated street frequented by the local surfers, environmentalists and Farmers Market shoppers.

ST: Apart from the Green Room, in what other ways is Hobie "going green?"
JS: Our entire warehouse has been moving in that direction for a while now and all of our stores utilize natural lighting and plenty of solar tubes throughout. Our new store, being built in Dana Point, will have over 30 Solar Tubes utilizing natural light all day and taking over when it gets dark. The landscape will be very costal and sustainable with native plants from South Orange County.

ST: Are you satisfied with how the Green Room was carried out? Is there anything you would like to see change?
JS: We are all really stoked on both Green Rooms since their opening in June and August. The only thing we would like to see change is a constant stream of new and innovative products coming in and out. It's really been fun and we are including another "green" - section in our new Dana Point store in May.

Visit the Green Room at 151 Avenida Del Mar, San Clemente (949) 542-3400.
